How do we RISE as a city?
One individual at a time.
‘Nightline’ co-host, Byron Pitts, tells you how it was possible for him. At Rise Up! Waco, the author shares his personal story and details the struggles he faced with a speech impediment and how he made it as a multiple Emmy award winning journalist. Pitts was raised in a working class family by a single mother. He was illiterate until the age of twelve and overcame a stutter. Come for an evening of fine food and wine and celebrate how generations of Wacoans can be helped to Rise Up! Proceeds of the event benefit Talitha Koum Institute, a mental health, brain development program for extreme-risk children, birth to five.
Join us! April 10, 2018. 6:00 p.m. at the Pavilion. The evening will include a farm-to-table family style dinner catered by Olive Branch. Followed by a message from our guest speaker and live auction.
Our guest speaker for the evening is Byron Pitts, a multiple Emmy award winning journalist and is a co-anchor of ABC’s Nightline. Pitts’ many achievements are all the more extraordinary when he tells of the many obstacles he faced as a child.
Julie Hays is shown here with last year’s guest speaker, LaDainian Tomlinson. Julie “anchors” our show just as she does for KWTX evening news. Her professional credits include an Emmy nomination and multiple “best of” awards statewide and locally.
Our live auctioneer for the event is ESPN's David Smoak, host of "You Make the Call," and program director of ESPN-Central Texas. Founder of "David Smoak's Academic All-Stars," David honors the best high school student-athletes in Central Texas.
Our dinner is catered by Leah Stewart of the Olive Branch, bakery & cafe. The fresh farm-to-table menu features sliced beef tenderloin (gf), chicken roulades with spinach-artichoke filling, creative chef-prepared side dishes and desserts.
